The Things That Keep Me Up at Night

I'm a little late on this observation since it dates back to the bowl games and the awesome halftime shows I was treated to, but I thought I'd share anyhow.

Why do members of marching bands have to wear such terrible outfits? What rule requires the jumpsuit style ensembles, the hats that sit so low they cover the eyes of the wearer, the fringe, and the feathers? What can't the uniform be jeans and a school t-shirt?

Also, is there a dorkier person in the band than the person who plays the cymbals? I mean, what reason could you have for playing the cymbals besides a deep desire to be in the band? For many other instruments, the band could just be a side activity, the greater goal some bigger musical accomplishment. But the cymbals, um, not so much. And does it really take any talent to crash two large pieces of metal together? I think I could do that. If I wanted to be in the band. If I wanted to wear that awesome outfit.

You know what I love most about you, Theresa? You've an even bigger b**** than I am. And that's saying something:)

Seriously, though--I'm with you on the cymbal kid.

Clearly you've never been in the marching band. Okay, so yeah, it's full of big dorks, but can you honestly say you don't like watching them perform? And you'd really rather see them in jeans than uniforms? I think the uniforms stem from the days of military marching bands and while some of them have gone way over the top, there are some that look kind of sharp I think. And usually the cymbal person also does other things besides just play the cymbals--they play a lot of percussion instruments including the xylophone. You'd be susrprised how many people suck at percussion.

That's all, I just had to defend the band a little bit :)

I think part of my hatred for marching bands stems back to my college days and the "Marching Owl Band," otherwise known as MOB, otherwise known as the most obnoxious thing to grace a football field ever. This band had kids dorkier than the cymbals kids...you could play the kazoo. Yes, the kazoo.

And I'm sure I would be one of those people who suck at percussion. I suck at all things musical.

I think its odd how marching band and football mix so well. I mean, did the band start playing at halftime so someone would actually hear them perform other than thier families?

Now they are just so good together. Glad football gave 'em a chance.

Theresa, You don't suck at all things musical. You did play piano very well and still can play it pretty good.

To represent your declining musical talent, mom shifted from the grammatically correct "well" to the not-so-correct "good." All-in-all, I think the representation of this idea through incorrect usage works quite well. Good job Mom.

I always heard horror stories about the band at Dayton. Long hours, unhealthy expectations, and hazing. Many kids did not want to play the athletic events, but were forced to if they wanted to participate in other events(more "classical" events).

I will always like the UD band, though, because once we had a basketball game on Ash Wednesday(not quite sure how that was approved) and the band played "Jesus is Just Alright With Me." My friends wouldn't buy the idea that it was more than a coincidence. Those of you who know my friends also know of their lack of critical thinking skills and intelligence in general.

Finally, I will never like UofL's band because they quit playing "25 or 6 to 4" which, when played by a full band, sounds almost better than Chicago doing it.

Bands are weird and yet can be very entertaining at halftime of football games, so long as they play acceptable music. This acceptable music does not include the Eagles or Boston. However it does include Queen. I dislike very much "pep" bands.

I knew I had used an adjective instead of an adverb and figured I would be told about it. I hit the publish button as I realized it. Oh well, it is good to know the one getting his doctorate in English caught the error.

hahaha. i love your family.

i dated a guy in college who was a band geek in his highschool days. he taught "band camp" every summer. so, needless to say i was dragged to a lot of band competetions & games if they had somthing special to play. i kinda got into it. yeah, they may be geeks but we all gotta have our thing.

we now live near a field & i love hearing them in the distance working their booties off. because it is intense work being a band geek.

costumes are completely over the top- though.

ps. bryan & i were just discussing our trip to see you last night!
